The expressiveness of materials

Refuge for a teacher in the mountains

The expressiveness of materials

Type: Residential, Architecture

Use: Shelter for a teacher

Site: Sierra de Gredos, Ávila

The aim of the project is to create a refuge that blends into its surroundings and the plot. We seek simplicity in construction, taking advantage of the conditions of the site, its orientation, views and materials. To this end, an independent volume is designed that develops organically and enters into an intimate relationship with the plot.

The construction is carried out using a structure of load-bearing walls and local materials, stone and wood. These walls divide the shelter into two bodies, two levels, one more private and the other more public, night and day, one more open, the other more closed.

Walls that take refuge under a single roof, as if it were a leaf that had settled on them. They are destined to be the protagonists of the space. They draw an expressive gesture, entering and leaving the house, turning, articulating the space, generating intensity between the two and marking the relationship between the interior and exterior of the house.
