The brief challenged us to undertake the complete overhaul of a corner apartment in a high-rise building in La Malagueta, overlooking the sea. Originally, the space felt dark and disconnected, ignoring both the direction of natural light and the Mediterranean views. The layout was highly fragmented, defined by gloomy corridors.

A Radical Layout Overhaul

From the very beginning of the project, it was clear to us that we needed to bring natural light and views into the public areas, where daily life unfolds. To achieve this, we created an axis that connects the entrance to the living room, the terrace, and the sea views. Furthermore, we positioned the open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area at the very corner of the building. This forced us to completely reconfigure the home’s entire layout.

In the new organization, the bedrooms and more private areas are situated on either side, facing the lateral streets across two distinct wings. One wing is dedicated to the children’s bedrooms. The other is designed for the couple, functioning as an independent apartment with its own en-suite bathroom and dressing area. At the center lies the heart of the home, formed by the main living spaces (living room, dining room, and kitchen) facing the sea. The kitchen is separated from the dining area by a bespoke lacquered steel and fluted glass sliding door designed by MLKT. This division allows it to be visually independent while maintaining the overall brightness of the entire space.

The Outcome of a Comprehensive Renovation

The new configuration of the home enhances its usability and generates a heightened sense of comfort. Circulation flows and privacy are better controlled: dark pathways have disappeared, and the distances between the rooms and the central hub feel shorter.

Although it involves a more complex construction process, completely turning a home like this around can resolve many of its previous issues, imbuing it with much higher quality and comfort. The comprehensive renovation we proposed for this apartment in La Malagueta successfully transformed a once-dark space into a home completely open to the sea.
